To
help you make an informed decision about converting
your vehicle to LPG, we have compiled the following
buyers guide:
Effects of the recent fuel price rises
A price check in Bristol at the beginning of
August showed petrol averaging 90p per litre,
whereas the cheapest LPG could be found at Asda,
Cribbs Causeway at just 29p per litre – well
under half the price. Demand for LPG conversions
has soared over the last few weeks due to these
sharp fuel price rises, so it is recommended
that all customers book as soon as possible
to avoid delay.
Good news in the Chancellor's Budget
for Automotive LPG
The 2004 and 2005 budgets have been good news
for autogas. The Chancellor announced that the
differential in duty between automotive LPG and
petrol and diesel would be cut by only one penny
per litre over each of the next three years. In
response to this announcement, the LPG Association
made the following statement: “This announcement
is a clear recognition by the government that
LPG vehicles are the cleanest available on
the roads today. The industry is delighted
by this news on behalf of the 100,000 motorists
who will be financially rewarded for doing
the best for the environment. LPG suppliers,
vehicle manufacturers and converters will be
able to respond to customers requirements,
which are the basis for making sound investments
to further develop this market.”
What system?
There are numerous LPG systems on the market
that vary considerably in quality and price.
Most modern vehicles have complex engine management
systems and therefore require a sequential multipoint
system that will work in harmony with the vehicle.
The Romano Sequential Injection System has been
designed with the latest vehicles in mind. Prices
range from £1050 - £1800 plus vat,
approx. Romano also have a range of LPG systems
for older vehicles - click here
for details.
Price versus quality
There are cheaper, systems on the market, but
if they are not suited to your vehicle they may
break down and will almost certainly not be a
green as they should be.
What installer?
Converting a car to use LPG is a time consuming,
specialised job. It is essential that the installer
you choose is both a competent mechanic and fully
trained to LPGA standards. All Romano Approved
Centres work to these high standards. There is
a network of Romano Approved Centres throughout
England and Wales.
Savings
This is the reason most people decide to convert
to LPG. At less than half the price of petrol,
the savings are considerable. Anyone driving more
than 10,000 miles per year should recoup the cost
of conversion relatively quickly. Cheaper LPG
systems can be a false economy - not only will
they be unreliable, but the fuel economy may be
considerably less.
Grants
Grants are no longer available, but for most
motorists this should not make much difference.

Emissions
LPG is a very clean burning fuel, which is good
both for your engine and the environment. The
reason it is half the price of petrol or diesel
is because the government charge far less duty,
to encourage motorist to switch to this cleaner
fuel. However, some poorly carried out conversions
offer little benefit to air quality. This should
be given careful consideration when purchasing
an LPG conversion.
Servicing
If the right equipment is fitted by a professional
fitter then your new LPG system should give you
years of trouble free motoring. The system will
require an annual service, therefore good service
coverage is important. There is a network of Romano
Approved Centres throughout England, guaranteeing
good after sales care.
Warranty
Your vehicle's existing manufacturers warranty
will remain in place. However, this will not cover
the LPG system or any other part whose failure
can be attributed to the LPG fitting. It is very
important therefore that the fitter is competent
both in the installation of LPG equipment and
to carry out work on your car. All Romano approved
centres guarantee the systems they fit.
Insurance
You should inform your insurance company of the
conversion. Most insurance companies will not
increase the premium provided that the work has
been carried out by qualified mechanics, such
as Romano Approved Installers.
Resale value
With LPG vehicles becoming more popular, when
you come to sell your vehicle, many potential
buyers will be attracted to the prospect of half
price fuel, so you should find your conversion
will enhance the resale value. However, if the
system has been poorly fitted or it is the wrong
system for the vehicle then the car will be harder
to sell. So again, a cheap LPG system may be prove
to be poor value long term. Click
